The Cornerstone pub resturant in Kingston Upon Thames is a lovely family-friendly venue, located in The Rotunda. As my loyal followers and readers already know, the kids and I are always in the Rotunda. You will often find us at the Odeon cinema, watching films. We go more than anybody I know, but as a scriptwriter, this is part of my work, I have to watch good films as part of my research. Whilst I am preparing to study for my Masters in Screenwriting this Autumn, I have actually been ordered to watch as many good films and television shows as I possibly can, by television professionals before my course starts. I take my work very seriously, so off to the cinemas, we went again. The kids obviously love this and never complain about mummy’s work. After we have watched a film, the kids and I usually go for something to eat. Again, my loyal Instagram followers will know that we like to try and eat out in different places so that I can do a review on the venue and on the food. This week the children chose to eat at The Cornerstone in Kingston Upon Thames.
I used to bring my eldest son to The Cornerstone in Kingston for something to eat when he was a toddler. I remember how much he loved the desserts, and the children’s menu had really good healthy options on it. I was excited to go back to try the menu and to spend some nice quality family time with the children. Troy was intrigued to see if they still served his favourite ice cream Sundae from when he was younger.
We visited The Cornerstone on Friday afternoon. The film we had just been to see, Dora and the Lost City of Gold had finished just in time for dinner. The Cornerstone was quite busy with customers, however, we were given a lovely table near the back of the resturant which was quiet so that we could enjoy our food and drink in peace. The menu has changed and updated since I was a student at Kingston University, bringing my toddler out for dinner. There were lots of lovely classic dishes, mixed with healthy alternatives. The only issue I had was deciding what I was going to order. Honestly, I think it took me about fifteen minutes to decide what food I was going to eat.
In the end, I decided that I would order the half of chicken on a bed of peppers with Carribean sauce. The two sides that I picked to go with this main were Mexican rice and a mixed side salad. I love my chicken, and I am always cooking chicken for the family. Italian chicken, Carribean chicken, curried chicken, grilled chicken, roast chicken, linseed chicken, Spanish chicken, Morrocan chicken, Greek chicken, BBQ chicken, fried chicken, I am actually quite the expert when it comes to cooking and eating chicken. If you have ever read one of my Breastfeeding recipe books, you will know that they are packed full of chicken recipes. When I tasted this half of a roast chicken I was instantly blown away. It was so succulent and perfectly juicy, as a chicken should be. It was absolutely cooked to perfection. Often restaurants seem to overcook chicken, which dries it out and loses all of the juicy taste. The Cornerstone’s half of chicken was the best chicken I have eaten out in a resturant since I went on holiday to Cape Verde.
The Carribean sauce was a very bright yellow, and when mixed together with the roast chicken it was delectable! The sauce was a perfectly smooth texture, not too runny and not too thick, it was just perfect. The Carribean sauce also tasted amazing with the bed of mixed peppers which were laid underneath the half of chicken. I am pepper crazy and eat peppers with everything! Peppers are full of Vitamin C which is a good and natural way for your body and skin to produce collagen. I honestly really loved the bed of peppers underneath the chicken, they were a nice little bonus for me and added extra taste to the meal.
If I had to pick one favourite part of this whole dish, it would have to be the Mexican rice. Again, I am crazy for Mexican food as my Instagrammers already know! I have been to Mexico twice and I love the culture and the unique cuisine. Chili Relleno Squares are one of my famous and yummiest dishes! In order to get the Mexican food right, you need to use a perfect amount of ingredients, and spice which is what helps the food to taste so unique. The Cornerstone in Kingston has managed to perfect the Mexican rice which was my favourite part of the meal. I think I made the best choice in ordering this food combination, as together it looked and tasted absolutely beautiful. I cannot recommend this dish enough! I will for certain be going back to the resturant to order this meal again.
The children’s menu is full of lots of healthy options which is a big plus for me. It also has a small eaters option and a large eaters option which I think is fabulous as I have an eight-year son who loves to eat his food, and two toddlers who don’t eat so much, so I think this is a great choice. You can also add desserts and drinks from the children’s menu to the food at a smaller cost. When I read the food options out to my children, my youngest son kept saying that he wanted pasta and chips. I kept laughing and telling him that he could not have both pasta and chips together and that he needed to pick just one.
Luckily, for my toddler, The Cornerstone in Kingston catered to his very unique choice of food. I have a feeling that he is now going to be requesting this dish everywhere that we go! My toddler was extremely happy with his food and ate it all up. My little girl had the same dish and ate as much as she could. There were no complaints from the little people!
Troy decided that he would order chicken nuggets, chips and beans. Although he could not decide if he wanted beans or corn on the cob as his side. Troy loved his food and he didn’t leave a single crumb on his plate! Troy also ate some of his little sister’s pasta which he equally loved.
The boys both had fruit shoots for their drinks, and my baby girl had a glass of milk. I really like the fact that they offer milk as a drink option with the children’s menu as not a lot of restaurants do this. I also liked the fact that the milk is priced at just 50p a glass, which as a mother I think this is wonderful. In the past, I have had to pay as much as 2.50 for a small glass of milk for my baby girl, and been made to feel like restaurants have had to go out of their way to go and kget her a glass of milk. The Cornerstone offers healthy drink options for both children and adults, which I am extremely happy about. I am very pro-health and love fresh ingredients.
It was a Friday afternoon, a long day was an understatement so for me, I ordered a large glass of dry white wine. The Pino Grigio was luscious and without a fault. The dry white wine tasted divine with my food and I was very impressed with it. The wine was fresh, chilled to perfection and flavoursome. After the main meal and drinks, I could have left the resturant and been a very happy lady indeed. Could the food and drink really have got any tastier?
Of course, it could! The boys each ordered ice cream sundaes, one chocolate and one strawberry. I honestly do not know who ate their dessert faster, Troy or his little brother? The chocolate sweet sundae is the same ice cream dessert that I used to bring Troy for when he was a toddler. As much as he tried he could never quite finish one which was so cute to watch. Now he is a big kid he had no problem finishing his dessert off and was thrilled that the resturant still served his favourite ice cream sundae.
The strawberry ice cream was also packed full of flavour and ‘scrumptious’ as my toddler kept saying. Neither of the kids offered me a taste of their desserts! Although they did swap strawberries for a few chocolate pieces with each other which was doubly sweet.
For me? I can’t have a dessert without having a cup of coffee. The cappuccino was honestly the best cup of coffee that I have tried in a long time. As I previously mentioned, the kids and I are always in the Rotunda visiting the Odeon. The cinema no longer serves hot drinks itself, and instead, it has opened up a Costa Coffee inside. All summer long I have had issues with the lattes and coffees that I have been buying from there. I like to have a cup of coffee whenever I go to watch a film so that I can sit back and relax whilst enjoying my hot beverage. This has not been the case since the summer holidays began, and so far we have been to watch 9 films at the cinemas, so this is a big issue for me. Since I have tasted how nice The Cornerstones coffee is, I will happily buy a latte or a cappuccino from the resturant to take with me into the cinemas if they do takeaway cups. If not, I may just take one of my own travel mugs with me and see if they will fill it up with coffee before we go. I will happily pay an extra charge for this. Not only will this solve a dilemma that I am currently having right now, but it will also taste delicious and make my film/research far my enjoyable.
But who had the best dessert? I would have to say that was me! The millionaire’s cheesecake was out of this world! Cheesecake is my ideal dessert! I shared my dessert with my princess, she ate mostly the ice cream and I devoured the cheesecake! Both of the boys tried my millionaire’s cheesecake and they loved it too! Troy now keeps saying that he cannot wait to go back to the Cornerstone in Kingston so that he can eat the millionaire’s cheesecake. Honestly, it was like a little taste of paradise.
The only issue I have right now with The Cornerstone in Kingston Upon Thames is that the food and drink are too tasty and this resturant might have to become our new ‘go-to’ place for cake and coffee, or before/after we visit the cinema. Which means I may end up overindulging in all of the tasty goodies! I would also like to point out that all of the staff members were extremely welcoming and friendly and would go out of their way to help the customers. I would also like to say a special and big thank you from me and the children to Aman and Reena who are fantastic managers and did a great job! Aman also helped me to pick the millionaire’s cheesecake so thank you!
Overall, I cannot fault The Cornerstone in Kingston Upon Thames. There is a wide variety of food to choose from all at good prices, the children’s menu has plenty of healthy options. The food and drink were both equally delicious and tasty. I rate The Cornerstone in Kingston an exquisite five out of five stars! We will absolutely be going back, and hopefully, it will become my new coffee place for the cinemas! As for Trizzy Troy? He has decided that he would love to take his grandma and granddad to The Cornerstone for a cake and coffee treat when they come to visit us at the end of the summer. He has also decided that he wants to do some food challenges for his Youtube channel in The Cornerstone Kingston, so keep a lookout for his videos guys!
